The people behind the fieldbook

Ottervelvetrain is an independent information project about the preparation that makes mountain astronomy more understandable, responsible and rewarding.

Our starting point

First-time travelers should not need specialist vocabulary to ask a useful question. We explain the differences between a dark sky and a steady one, a visitor programme and a research facility, an exciting itinerary and a workable observing plan.

The site is published by Ottervelvetrain Ltd. It is not an expedition operator, travel agent, observatory or weather service.

Our editorial approach

We favor official visitor information, established astronomical references and clear explanations of uncertainty. Where conditions or access can change, we direct readers to the organization responsible rather than presenting a permanent promise.

Destination examples are context, not rankings or personal endorsements. Named organizations and observatories are not affiliated with this website.

What we do not claim

We do not claim firsthand inspection of every destination, professional mountain guiding credentials or the ability to assess your personal health. Our articles cannot replace local expertise, current access notices, individual medical advice or an operator’s safety briefing.

There are no live forecasts, booking services or paid recommendation links in this static fieldbook. A clear sky cannot be guaranteed, and altitude alone is not a measure of a good observing experience.

Help improve the next edition

If an official visitor programme changes, a source moves or a passage needs clarification, please tell us which page is affected and include a current authoritative reference. Do not send sensitive personal or medical information.
